"Ordered this class II Hidden Hitch from another vendor because the Curt class II model ordered from JCW did not fit properly. I installed this on my 2004 Outback Wagon. Be sure to order the 84 cent 7/16" bolt leader (#80103-1) to simplify the process.
***I needed to add additional spacers between the hitch and the tie-down brackets on both sides. I also needed to grind down some of the turned out lip of the tie-down bracket on the passenger side so that the hitch would move more toward the passenger side. Without the extra spacers it would have been necessary to torque the bolts so tight that the tie-down brackets would each bend at least 1/4 inch closer toward the hitch (if possible) to be flush with the spacers provided. Despite these modifications, the center of the hitch was still 1/4 to 1/2 inch left of center as viewed from the rear of the vehicle.
***This hitch -- unlike the Curt model -- provided sufficient space for the carbon cannister without requiring distortion or further modification. It is also about 4-5 pounds heavier than the Curt model but has 50 lbs less tongue capacity. You probably shouldn't be towing something with 350 lbs tongue weight on that vehicle anyway! I chose the Hidden Hitch model because, for the same price, they include the hitch bar, pin, and clip assy.
***Once you drop down the carbon canister, it would probably take only 30 minutes or less to install this hitch if you made NO modifications. You'll need two 19 mm socket or open end wrenches as well as a 17 mm socket. Cannister removal requires 12 mm socket (suggest a 6 pt wrench since these cap nuts may be quite rusted on your vehicle.
***Finally, the rubber hitch receiver cover seems to fit a tad looser than I'd prefer and I will be getting some type of cover to close off the passenger end of the hitch bar which is open and will encourage early rusting."
