Protect your Dashboard with the Right Dash Cover

A dash cover is probably the most basic car accessory that you can get for your dashboard improvements. It basically functions as a protective cover that shields your dashboard from dirt and damage. This component also protects the dash from the extreme heat of the sun by cooling down the cabin area of the vehicle.

Dash Cover Buying Guide

If you are planning to get one, there are several factors that you need to consider first. Below is a quick and basic guide that will help you make the right choice.

Material

Dash covers or mats come in different kinds of materials. Here are some of the most common types that you will find in the market today.

  • Velour. It is a type of stretchable, knitted fabric that looks and feels like velvet. Velour covers often come with extra foam cushions for added protection.
  • Carpeted. Carpeted dash covers are quite common because of their non-shrinking capabilities. They are also durable, easy to install, and can protect the dashboard for a long time.
  • Suede. With its napped finish, suede also makes for a popular dash cover because of its durability and classic look. Aside from making the dashboard look good, it also provides the right amount of protection against damage-causing elements.
  • Plastic. Plastic dash covers are usually made using lightweight ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) material that can withstand extremely hot or cold temperatures.

Color

The most common dash cover colors that you'll find in the market today are black, gray, beige, charcoal, and smoked. However, if you want to add a dash of color in your vehicle, you can find special and rare colors like wine, oak, taupe, etc. You can also find pattern designs like animal prints (e.g. zebra, cheetah, leopard).

Price

The price of a dash cover mainly depends on the brand and material that you'll get but they generally cost around $50 or less. Velour and carpeted covers usually cost around $35 while suede types cost around $50. Plastic dash covers, on the other hand, are the most expensive, costing at around $100.

Dash Cover Maintenance

  • Before doing a major cleanup on your dashboard cover, keep in mind that different materials may require different cleaning processes. To be sure, take a look at the cover's manual for instructions on how to clean it.
  • You can do an initial cleanup using a car vacuum or soft brush to remove loose dust on top of the cover.
  • In general, you can spot clean almost all kinds of dash covers using warm water and soft cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals that can possibly damage the cover and degrade its quality. To be sure, stick to mild cleaning detergents.
  • Over time, dash covers will eventually fade even if they are UV treated. To slow down the fading process, you might want to invest in a good windshield cover. This accessory will not only provide protection to the dashboard cover, but it will also help protect the rest of your vehicle's interiors.
