Better Than Nothing -- Sometimes,

"The title of this review pretty much describes Haynes manuals.
When the 4X4 control module went out on my '92 Explorer, a good manual would have led me straight to the diagnosis based on the symptoms. But my Haynes manual had no mention -- anywhere -- that the module even existed.
I don't know what vehicle Haynes used for their manual for my '97 Silverado, but its section on the 4WD system bears no resemblance to the vehicle I have.
Photos in Haynes manuals are generally of poor quality, poorly annotated, and are frequently misreferenced in the text. Schematics tend to be incomplete and look like third-generation black-and-white photocopies. For example, try finding the gas gauge circuit in any Haynes manual for a Nissan Sentra.
In the section on OBD II trouble codes, Haynes lists each code and then, under a heading "Probable Cause," simply regurgitates each code's definition. (Gee, thanks a lot! I know what the code translates to. I want to know what to DO about it; that's why I bought the manual.)
I can't think of anything in a Haynes manual that I can't find for free (with MUCH better information and advice) in some Internet forum.
Save your money."

1993-2000 Grand Cherokee Repair Manual,

"Used the manual to replace radiator. The description was so vague that probably could do as well just guessing. There are a lot of plastic retainers in the parts that need to be removed in order to get to the radiator.
After guessing where these retainers are, you still do not know how to disengage them. I broke them, which may in fact be the only way to remove the pieces. Unfortunately, I also broke the grill support or headlight support piece that spans from LH fender to RH fender.
Also, not a word in the book on how to disconnect electrical connectors. Don't laugh - although these connectors are easy to disengage once you know how, they are very complicated and difficult to work - especially in a tight place where you can not see what you are doing. A simple diagram or even paragraph explaining how they function should be in the manual."

"I have 3 Chiltons and a Haynes. The Haynes is for a '97 Dodge Ram 2500. It is useless. Buy the Chiltons. That's what I am doing now. The Haynes will be fine for a bird cage liner."
