RollBak Review
January 17, 2012
By Acadianbob
Pros: Secure, Strong
Cons: Freezes shut, Doesn't seal well, balky mechanism
"The mechanism is balky. It only has 3 intermediate positions. The intermediate stop points can break. It leaks substantial amounts of water; especially at the tailgate. Worst of all, it freezes shut in the winter and you can't open it. The cover over the cannister does not seal well against the rolltop so leaves etc. can easily enter the cannister. Then the drains get plugged. The pull strap is a pain in the butt. I had this product for 6 years so have a good idea of it. I put a Retrax Pro rolltop on my new truck. It is vastly superior."

Overall very nice but not all I was expecting

Pros: Sleak design and Fairly straightforward installation
Cons: Does not have intermittent locking feature, Needs additional weatherstripping
"Product arrived well packaged and undamaged. Did not have any of the installation issues for a 04 Ford F150 that were stated in the previous reviews. No modifications needed. Everything fit perfectly. Instructions were full color pictures with directions that were easy to follow. Only need wrenches and a Phillips bit drill. Only have to drill 4 holes into the bed of the truck. Everything else is installed with brackets. One big disappointment is this product does not feature the intermittent locking system as shown in the demonstration video under the product details page. I can live with it but I felt it was a little misleading. The standard bed caps on the F150 prevent a seal between the cover and the bulk head rail of the truck nearest the cab. Purchased some weatherstripping at a local auto store which closed the gap and worked great. Also might consider getting some 3M molding tape to attach the water drainoff canister to the bed of the truck as it is not flush. The tape worked great to ensure all runoff goes into the canister. Overall a nice looking cover and would recommend."

Pros: Looks great,
Cons: Hard to get adjusted properly
"I have been looking for quite a while for a bed cover that would work with the tail wing on the SRT-10 Dodge Ram. The problem is that the wing is very low and most of the covers require that there be at least 4 or 5 inches of clearance for the operation of the cover. and I did not want a soft cover. I purchased this one based on one of the other reviews here on this product. Over all I am very pleased with my purchase. The cover looks great, and operates well, once properly adjusted, It is just the look that I was looking for. I installed the cover with smooth brushed aluminum bed caps the caps match well with the factory rims on the truck. The instructions were complete and better than most. My son-in-law and myself worked on the installation for about 4 hours in all, it only took about 2 hours for the installation, and another 2 hours to get it adjusted properly. There were no real problems until we reinstalled the tail wing, the wing overlapped the rails by about 1/16 of an inch on each side, it made the wing very difficult to get back on. And once on, it forced the track rails of the cover down causing the cover to bind in the last 10 to 12 inches. Rather than modifying the rails or the wing I put a flat washer under the slide pin for the wing lifting it up a little. This allowed the rails to sit in their proper position. There was a gap between the wing and the bed that easy to fix by putting a piece of rubber between the wing and the bed creating a sort of gasket. Once carefully trimmed it looks like it belongs there. I would recommend this product, but be aware that the installation is not for a novice. It can take a lot of time to get it adjusted properly."

Pros: Great looks, cargo security, fuel economy
Cons: Installation is a real bear. Not for the faint of heart.
"I installed this cover on my 2003 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab, and it looks fantastic. I carry my golf clubs, tools, etc in the bed with total confidence that they won't get stolen while I'm gone. Retractable tonneaus are the way to go, in my opinion; you get the truck bed flexibility of a soft top with the security and peace of mind of a hard top.
This thing would have gotten a five star rating overall, but the installation was a big headache, so the one-star rating there drags the overall down to a four. Honestly, I love this cover, and if I had it to do over again, I'd buy this again in a heartbeat. The only thing I would do differently is allot more time to the installation. It took me about five hours to get this job done, so it's not going to be something you want to get started on in the evening one day after work. The instructions are extremely poor, and serve only to point you in the right general direction. For my truck, I needed to use the included shims for the bed rails, because they're not perfectly straight--but I never found the "included" shims and had to make my own. Irritating. But making the shims was fairly straightforward, as is the installation in general. If the cover had fit my truck like it was supposed to, I do believe that it could have been accomplished in an hour or so. The long leg of the whole process was all the modification that was required. On the other hand, I have pretty limited tools available, so it may go faster if you've got a better equipped shop.
The repairs that I required were a notch cut into the bracket that holds the canister at the front of the bed, because the rails were about 3/8" too long to allow the tonneau to catch the safety latch. This led to some other various notches which needed to be cut, but on the bright side, all the extra engineering I did was accomplished with a drill, Dremel tool, and a 67-piece mechanic's tool kit, so it's not like you need a fully-tooled machine shop to get this thing on and looking good...but it would help!
The bottom line is: I would recommend this to a friend, as long as that friend was mechanically inclined and enjoyed these sorts of problem-solving challenges. The installation is fairly straighforward, as long as it fits your truck correctly, which from reading the other reviews, I wouldn't count on. However, even if you have to modify the thing, it's not too bad of a job, just time consuming if you don't have the right tools. If you like challenges and have a Saturday to eat up working on your truck, this cover is for you. It looks great when it's done, it's secure, and the silver lining of the installation is that once it's on, you'll feel like you really accomplished something. Be patient, think things through, take your time and you'll have an extremely valuable and handsome addition to your truck. Good luck!
