" Aware of the challenges that others had faced, I set aside plenty of time to install the rack on my jk. I did the install where you modify the factory rear bumper by cutting holes in it to allow the rack to mount to the frame in the rear. Good documentation exists online explaining how to do this. I also took the advice from others to use friction or sports tape to tighten up the pole connections and got rubber o rings to put between connections. The thing is rock solid. I am now in the process of finding rack accessories for skis, bikes, boats, etc. The 1.5 inch crossbars are a bit too large for most Yakima / Thule stuff so I may end up adding Thule 450 bars for compatibility with accessory racks and ease of putting the soft top down. Record this purchase for those willing to roll up their sleeves for a non-trivial install. It does add some wind noise ad well at higher highway speeds. "

Sturdy but Difficult Installation

" The Smitty rack was installed on a 2001 Wrangler to carry a canoe and kayak. The rack is remarkably sturdy and does an admirable job with very little movement. Only downside in performance is some wind noise. However, installation was much more difficult than necessary. The rear brackets bolt on using the bumper bolts but the holes are not spaced properly. It took some time with a round file to widen the opening to match the bumper bolts. Also the bends at the top of the front tubes was not accurate and had to be adjusted. Changing the bends of the 2 inch tubes was difficult since they are very rigid. Also, the plastic knobs on the bolts holding the cross bars had to be replaced. I recommend this product to anyone who doesn't mind correcting the manufacturing errors. "

Bad Advertising

" The ad for this rack claims 4 point mounting to door hinges and frame. When my rack arrived, the included instructions said the rack mounts only to the factory-installed rack which my jeep did not have. It then cost me $153.37 to return the useless product. Not recommended! "
Cons: Is not as advertised!

" This roof rack is exactly what I expected from reading reviews. It looks great and seems solid. It does add some wind noise. I had to modify the rear mount holes to accomodate my factory rear bumper. No big deal. Other than that it was relatively easy to install if you have any mechanical ability. A second pair of hands is a necessity. "
Pros: Solid. Looks Good.
Cons: Wind noise. Instructions. Had to modify.
