Driving with the sunroof open would be so enjoyable without the wind tunnels, whirling wind, as well as the noise it brings into the cabin. But these shouldn't stop you from taking pleasure in driving with an open sunroof. Outfit your ride with an air deflector to make full use of your sunroof minus all these nuisances.
Installing a sunroof wind deflector is as easy as 1-2-3. Here's how to do the installation properly:
What you'll need:
- Clean rag
- Soapy water
- Masking tape
- Sunroof air deflector kit
- Alcohol wipes (if not included in the kit)
Step 1: Clean the vehicle.
Wash your vehicle, paying particular attention to the sunroof and the area around it. If you don't have much time, at least wash the entire area around the sunroof using a clean rag and soapy water to eliminate loose dirt and grime buildup. Use the towel to wipe the area dry, and then air dry it for an hour or two.
Step 2: Wipe the mounting area with alcohol.
With alcohol wipes or prep pad, wipe the sunroof's rim or the area right where the sunroof and the vehicle's roof meet. The prep pad is usually included in the air deflector kit. If the one you've bought doesn't have it, you can purchase it separately. Let the alcohol dry thoroughly for 30 to 45 seconds. This is to make sure that the area is really clean enough for the deflector's adhesive to firmly stick into the mounting area and to prevent dirt from scratching the surface of the vehicle's roof while you're installing the deflector.
Step 3: Pre-fit the air deflector.
Position the deflector in the sunroof, right where you want it installed. This way, you'll know if this add-on perfectly matches the spot on the sunroof where it will be mounted. You may need to slightly bend some units to achieve proper fit. Take note of the tricks you made to make the deflector fit properly. Put a masking tape around the deflector's perimeter to mark its position.
Step 4: Install the deflector.
Lift the deflector and prepare the mounting area for proper tape adhesion by wiping alcohol wipes once again and letting the area dry completely. Carefully peel off the protective paper covering the adhesive tape at the back of the deflector's mounting flange. Reveal at least three inches of the adhesive. It is wise to leave the protective paper intact so it will be easier for you to peel it off completely.
Install the deflector, aligning it with the masking tape marks. Make the adhesive stick well to the surface by pressing the deflector in place. Slowly work your way towards the other end of the air deflector, pulling the remaining part of the protective paper to expose the rest of the adhesive tape.
Make sure the deflector is securely installed by pressing along its mounting flange. Let it sit on your sunroof for a few hours before taking your ride out for a drive. This will allow the tape to adhere well to the vehicle.
