Signs and Symptoms of a Broken Axle
Before you do a major overhaul on your axle assembly, you need to verify if you truly need replacement components. Here are some telltale signs that you can watch out for in your assembly.
- Noises - If you hear loud, clicking noises coming from the front or rear end of your ride every time you make a turn, take a closer look at the axles and see if they are the source of the problem.
- Greased tires - If you think you have busted axles in your system, check if the tires are greased, especially their inner edges.
- Vibrations - Unnecessary vibrations may be a symptom to a ton of other problems, but it's also a sign of having a faulty axle.
Replacing a Broken Axle Assembly
Taking your vehicle to the mechanic for axle repairs will definitely cost you hundreds of dollars. If you want to save some cash, you can do the job yourself. Just make sure that you have the right set of tools at hand.
Step 1: Before you begin, make sure that your vehicle is parked in a flat-level surface. After that, engage the parking brake and put chocks on rear wheels to avoid accidents.
Step 2: Loosen the lug nuts of the front wheels and then lift and support the front side of your vehicle using a jack and jack stands.
Step 3: When the vehicle is secure, remove the lug nuts and the two front wheels.
Step 4: After that, you can take the axle nut from the damaged component before disconnecting the lower ball joint and tie rod end. For this step, you can use the jack to support the lower control arm.
Step 5: Next, disconnect the steering knuckle from the axle assembly by pushing the axle in and supporting the steering knuckle with a wire.
Step 6: At this point, you should be able to take the axle components out. You can use a rubber mallet if it gives you a hard time.
Step 7: Install the new axle assembly and reinstall all the other components that you removed earlier before taking your car out for a test drive.
