Bed Rail Cap

 Shop Bed Rail Cap

With a bed rail cap set installed, your pickup truck will look more attractive while getting improved cargo-carrying capabilities. These add-ons also protect the top edges of the truck bed from dents and scratches that they can get while you are loading cargos on or unloading stuff from your truck bed. That said, it is but wise to outfit your workhorse with durable bed rail caps.

Aside from their aesthetic and practical benefits, truck bed caps are also easy to install. Yes, you need not spend much paying for a mechanic, as these add-ons can be installed in just a few hours even by novice DIYers. Here are the steps on how to securely mount new bed rail caps:

What you'll need:

  • Clean rags
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Automotive soap
  • Grease pencil
  • Water

Step 1: Inspecting the new pickup bed rail caps

This is important especially if you've purchased the parts online. Since you haven't personally checked the items when they are packed, it is wise to inspect first the contents of the package before starting off with the installation process. Make sure it contains the right type of bed rail caps along with the other items that are supposed to be included, like bolts and mounting hardware.

Step 2: Preparing the truck bed and the mounting surface

Before you start with the bed rail cap installation process, make sure your vehicle is parked in a covered garage or under a shaded area. Never work under direct sunlight, so you won't need to deal with a hot surface.

Next, wash the truck bed with water and automotive soap, paying more attention to the mounting surface. To get rid of wax and hard-to-remove dirt, rub the area on top of the bed rail using a rag dipped in rubbing alcohol. Dry the area to make the adhesive stick well.

Step 3: Installing the truck bed rail caps

Without peeling the adhesive tape, pre-fit each bed rail cap into place to know if it fits well. Use a grease pencil to mark the cap's outer edge. Make sure you see the mark clearly as it will be your guide in installing the cap.

Remove the bed rail cap and turn it upside down. Start peeling the backing of the double-sided tape to expose the adhesive. Following the marks you've put earlier, position the cap over the truck bed rail and press down on the tape with just enough force to make the adhesive stick to the surface well. Repeat the steps to install the other bed rail caps.

Step 4: Cleaning the bed rail caps and the area around them

Remove the grease-pencil mark and other types of dirt caused by the installation process by wiping them off with a clean rag.

Let the bed rail caps settle on their places for two to three hours before you use the truck. Avoid driving it off road or in dusty areas, as you can't wash your trucks for two to three days after installation. This will ensure proper adhesion of the bed rail cap.
