Bumper and Nerf Bar Kit

Shop Bumper and Nerf Bar Kit

Equipping your ride with a bumper and nerf bar kit offers several advantages. These include an easier means of climbing up and down from your huge pickup or SUV and extra protection against bumps and collisions. So if you want to enjoy the convenience of having sturdy side steps and performance-quality bumpers, grab a kit and install it by following these instructions:

Tools you'll need:

  • Socket wrench
  • Drill and bits (for vehicles with no factory-drilled holes)

Installing the nerf bars:

Step 1: Check if your vehicle has pre-drilled holes.

If your car has these holes, then skip to the next step. If not, you have to drill the holes using a drill and the right size of bit. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the size of the holes to be drilled in order to install the bumper and nerf bar kit.

Step 2: Attach the mounting brackets.

Once the holes are drilled or located, wipe the brackets to get rid of dust and debris; make sure the surface is clean before attaching anything. Then bolt the mounting brackets in place. Tighten the brackets up with a socket wrench according to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

Step 3: Mount the nerf bars.

Line the bar along the cockpit and attach them onto the mounting brackets by bolting them in place. Never over- or under-tighten the bolts since this could lead to premature wear and tear. To attach the nerf bar on the other side, repeat the steps.

Installing the bumper:

Step 1: Remove the old bumper and bumper brackets.

Use a socket wrench to unbolt the factory bumper and brackets. Depending on your car's make and model, the rear body mount and bolt may have to be removed first in order to remove and install the top bolt.

Step 2: Attach the mounting brackets.

Place the mounting brackets in position (where the old brackets were attached) and place the bolts in the holes. But don't tighten the bolts just yet. Check if you need to adjust anything.

Step 3: Bolt the bumper in place.

Place the bumper in position and install the bolts, flat and lock washers, and nuts included in the kit. Make some adjustments if needed. Once everything is properly aligned, tighten all the bolts with just the right amount of torque.

Installation tips

  • Although the installation process for both front and rear bumpers is similar, make sure you check the manufacturer's instructions.
  • When installing bolts, don't tighten them at once because you'll most likely have to make certain adjustments every now and then. If you're sure about the fit of the bumper and nerf bar kit, that's the time you can permanently tighten the bolts in place.
  • Before you begin the installation, make sure you check the bumper and nerf bar kit and see if all the hardware is included. Finding out that a bolt is missing when you're in the middle of the installation is a pain in the neck.
  • Because the bumpers and nerf bars are quite heavy, it's best if you have someone to assist you when placing these parts in position.
