Rust and severe damage can be lying just around the corner. Years of driving will bring in accumulated dirt, salt, road debris, dirt, and moisture to cab corners. Corrosive elements will ruin the metal that supports the cab. Rust holes are just the start. These small cracks can get larger until the holes are too big for you to ignore. Good thing is, you don't have to strip off the entire metal covering the cab corners. Before this part of the cab gets fully damaged, you can do something to fix it. A cab corner repair panel can come to your rescue. A corner patch panel can be used to replace the rusty or heavily dented panel on the cab. The repair patch can align with the rest of the cab panel and hug the corners and contours of the vehicle perfectly. This can stop rust from spreading and ruining the cab corners. The sheet metal can easily cover up the flaws and fix the problem for good. Here's what you have to do.

Patching things up with a cab corner repair panel

Step 1: Fit the repair panel on the cab. After setting this into place, use a marker for tracing around the panel. Once you're done tracing the outside, you can pull out the panel to start cutting along the marked line.

Step 2: Follow the marked line when cutting the metal using aviation snips. Straighten out and smoothen out the rugged edges of the trimmed metal by tapping them with body hammer.

Step 3: Remove paint and rust on the body panel. You may use a 60-grit flapper wheel that's connected to an angle grinder to get rid of rust and paint until the metal that surrounds the cut is already clean.

Step 4: Get ready to start welding. The ground cable of the MIG welder must be attached to the cab. As you switch on the welder, adjust the heat and wire speed. Look for that chart on the welder's inside cover and use this as a guide. Also, don't forget to wear a welding hood.

Step 5: Line up the cab corner repair panel on the opening in the cab corner. A tack weld must be positioned on one corner of the patch. Hold the MIG gun on the seam and then press the trigger. The trigger must be released after about 2 seconds. To secure the panel, tack welds must be fitted every half an inch throughout the seam of the panel and cab corner. You can then run a weld along the tacked seam. Let the seam cool after the welding.

Step 6: Smooth out the weld through grinding. Use a 60-grit flapper wheel and an angle grinder. After this, you have to use a body hammer for tapping out the spots on the welded seam to keep the panel smooth and even.

Cab corner repair panel notes and tips

  • When fixing cab corners, some patch panels are set into place using epoxy. Other panels may also be screwed or pop-riveted.
  • The surface needs to be prepped up before it's painted.
  • Some patches included in the cab corner repair panel can be mounted on the existing panel and will align with the rest of the cab panel perfectly. Make sure that the rusted parts of cab corner are treated or removed.
  • Look for cab corner panels that will not only fit the contours of the vehicle but will also provide protection against rust. They should also have a solid construction for long-time use. A durable cab corner repair panel may be crafted from heavy-gauge steel and should be coated to resist rust and corrosion.
