Car Cover

 Shop Car Cover

Car covers help protect your car and maintain its value for years. But do you know that without proper cleaning, these covers can do your car more harm than good? You see, dirt can build up on the fabric of your car cover and it can affect the cover's water resistance. So aside from keeping your car clean, you should also maintain the cleanliness of your car's cover.

Depending on the material your cover is made of, it can either be hand washed or machine washed. To avoid damaging the cover instead of making it clean, here are the steps in washing it by hand or through a washing machine:

Machine wash instructions:

While many car covers are washable, you need to take extra care when washing them. As much as possible, have them washed in a commercial-sized machine with no center agitator.

What you'll need:

  • Mild detergent

Step 1: Put ¼ cup mild detergent/cleaner. Select your water (warm or cold) and cycle (normal or permanent) settings and allow the machine to start filling.

Step 2: Once the detergent has been dissolved, put the car cover. Set the machine to normal wash/rinse cycle.

Step 3: You may choose to run an additional rinse to get rid of all the soap.

Step 4: Allow the cover to dry completely. Avoid using the dryer unless the label on the cover says that it's machine dryable.

Hand washing instructions:

If you're sure that your car cover is in excellent condition and free of holes and tears, you can choose to wash it directly while it's on your car.

What you'll need:

  • Mild detergent
  • Warm or cold water
  • Bucket
  • Sponge or cloth
  • Hose

Step 1: Fill your bucket with either warm or cold water and add the right amount of detergent. You can follow the one-ounce-per-quart-of-water proportion.

Step 2: Remove any loose dirt and debris by spraying water on the cover using the hose.

Step 3: Wash the cover with a cloth or sponge and your cleaning solution.

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly using the hose, making sure all suds have been eliminated.

Step 5: Allow the cover to dry completely.

Should you wish to clean the underside of your car cover, just turn it inside out and place it back in the car. Repeat these five steps to clean the other side. Again, allow the cover to dry completely.

Dealing with hard-to-remove dirt

If your cover has bird dropping, sap, and excess dirt that are kind of hard to remove, you can try the following tips:

Tip # 1: For bird poop, you can apply vinegar, stain remover, or commercial products specially designed for such purpose. While washing the car cover with sponge and soapy water, thoroughly scrub the affected area.

Tip # 2: For sap, you can either apply denatured alcohol or mineral spirits to the area or scrape the dirt using a spoon or plastic knife.

Tip # 3: For excess dirt, apply a spray stain remover before washing. Allow it to sit in the dirt build up for a few minutes before washing the cover thoroughly.
