The Chevrolet G20 is one of the popular classic vans manufactured by General Motors for the North American market. It began production in the early 1960s and debuted in 1964 to replace the Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier van. This vehicle proved to be one of the top choices for both commercial and personal usage, and its three-decade run clearly explains why. The G20 van received upgrades by the time it was produced in 1971, and it continued to improve its features bit by bit until it reached the end of production in 1996 and was replaced by a new line.
Other than the low maintenance cost and the variety of choices for size and other options, the Chevrolet G20 also attracted consumers with its decent mileage. With the later models of the G20 featuring improved parts and technology, expect to experience pleasing results when it comes to fuel consumption and average mileage on either regular gasoline or diesel.
The newer G20s register a combined mileage for city and highway that ranges from 12 to 16 mpg. It became apparent, though, that this is the case among the Chevrolet vans that have 4.3 to 5.7-liter fuel tanks on board. Although there are vans in today\'s market that yield better figures than those on the G20, it should be important to keep in mind that the models used were produced in the 90s. Therefore, the technology on board the Chevrolet vans is what many would consider impressive during its time.
Owners of the Chevrolet G20 also faced problems with the van, even though many regard it as a good pick back then. There are not many records to qualify the average mileage the common problems were experienced in the older models, but the recent filed complaints by consumers that still use the G20 pointed at 90,000 to 100,000 miles.
According to these reports, the brake lights tend to malfunction after reaching this mileage. This problem, however, is easy to fix since a bad ground or a faulty wiring could just be the culprit. This does not mean, though, that a case of malfunctioning headlights only happen once your G20 has reached 100,000 miles. On a more serious note, the exhaust manifold on an old G20 can run too hot when not maintained properly. Replacing the exhaust manifold and other necessary components should be an easy task, but the challenge could be the process of looking for replacement parts since this model has been discontinued a long time ago.
Given the dated technology installed in the Chevrolet G20, the need to increase the MPG is a tempting idea. Fortunately, some DIYers claim to have increased theirs on the 1995 Chevy G20 by burning water with gasoline. An HHO generator installed under the hood is used to convert water to brown gas, which will function as fuel additive. This will improve engine efficiency and help you save gas yet still achieve improved results. While it is impossible to more than double your average MPG, using this method will result in an increase in your city and highway MPG.
