Is the fuel gauge in your Chevy Lumina stuck at empty even after a trip to the gas pump? Or is the needle permanently locked at a certain position? Either way, a fuel gauge that\'s not working properly-or not at all-can be very inconvenient especially when making long distance trips. If you are having troubles with your Chevrolet Lumina fuel gauge, here are some tips you can use to troubleshoot and fix it:
Once the fuel gauge goes down, take note if the other gauges in the dashboard\'s instrument cluster are still working normally. If not, there may be a problem with the fuse. A burnt, damaged, or defective fuse can prevent power from reaching the gauges, causing them to stop working or perform erratically. In the Lumina, the fuse is housed in a fuse block mounted on the right side of the dashboard, so be sure to check here first and replace any fuse that might be busted.
However, if the fuses appear to be in good condition, the next place you need to look at is the voltage limiter. Located near the alternator, a faulty voltage limiter can also cause your car\'s instrument gauges to behave erratically due to fluctuations in current.
Another usual cause of a faulty fuel gauge is rusted wiring. Any wire with exposed metal will corrode quickly, especially if you live in humid or coastal areas. And in such cases, you will need to inspect the wiring all the way to the fuel tank, fuel pump, and the fuel gauge. You can refer to the wiring diagram in the respective service manual for your Lumina model year to determine which wires to check.
After checking the wires, coat them with dielectric grease. This special grease can help deflect moisture away from the wires and slow down the onset of corrosion.
The fuel sending unit is another possible culprit in the case of a malfunctioning gauge. The sending unit rarely breaks down, but age, extreme operating temperatures, and other factors can cause the unit to fail.
To confirm if the sending unit is the source of the problem, you will need to check its resistance using a multimeter. Have the tank filled completely and set the multimeter to the 0 to 100 ohms range. Put the meter\'s red probe on the center post of the sending unit and check the reading. With a full tank, the meter should indicate a reading between 9 to 10 ohms. However, if the reading is somewhere in between 96 to 98 ohms, the sending unit is malfunctioning and has to be replaced.
If you checked all of the parts above and the fuel gauge still isn\'t working as it should, the gauge itself may be the one that\'s broken. Take note that the fuel gauge is not user-serviceable, so the best option when it breaks down is to replace the entire unit.
If the fuel gauge is indeed broken, have the replacement done by a professional unless you are a well-experienced DIYer. The gauge is integrated with the Lumina\'s instrument cluster assembly, and any attempt to replace the unit without proper knowledge and skill may damage the other gauges in the cluster.
