Differential Rebuild Kit
Are you planning to rebuild your ride's positive traction differential? While the task can be carried out by an experienced DIYer, this isn't as easy as it may sound. When doing this DIY project, you have to deal with several important vehicle components, such as rear wheels and brake assemblies. So, you have to be careful in disassembling and installing all the involved components.
If you now have your differential rebuild kit and you're getting ready for your DIY differential rebuild project, check out these tips first before you start off:
Check your aftermarket differential rebuild kit.
This is particularly important if you've purchased the kit online as you didn't personally see how it was packed. Check if all the components listed in the catalog as part of the kit are shipped to you. Once you're sure that the kit is complete, check the components one by one for any defect or physical damage and make sure they are of the right size. Have the kit replaced if the components included in it are not complete, have some kind of factory defect, or are not the actual size that you've ordered.
Familiarize yourself with the entire process.
After examining what's in the differential rebuild kit, the next thing you need to do is to make yourself more familiar with the whole process before you actually begin. By reading the installation instructions, finding out how complex processes can be carried out smoothly, and understanding the scope of your DIY project, the more confident and successful you will be. Since you know the scope of the project before you start with the task, you will also have an idea as to how long the project will take so that you can allot more time if necessary.
Ensure safety before getting under the car.
You may have a high-quality differential rebuild kit, but be sure you also have the right safety equipment. Do not make the mistake of working under a vehicle that isn't supported with a pair of jack stands rated for the weight of your vehicle model. To securely raise your car, make sure it is parked on a level, solid ground; hoist it with a jack and suspend it on jack stands.
Clean and inspect the differential housing, gears, and any part that will be reused.
Once you reach the point when you've unbolted the internal posi-trac gearing assembly and the interior part of the differential housing has been exposed, get your commercial automotive degreaser and apply it on the inside of the chamber. Make sure to wash out any loose dirt, sludge buildup, and any metal shaving.
When disassembling the integrated gearing, it is also wise to separate the components that will be replaced with the parts from the differential rebuild kit from those that will be reused. Using the automotive degreaser, clean all the components that will be reinstalled. Allow them to dry and check for damage before re-installing them.
Do not over-torque the differential cover bolts.
Consult your repair manual to know the torque specifications of your differential cover bolts and be careful not to over-torque them. You can use a torque wrench when setting the bolts to factory specifications, but avoid wrenching them too aggressively as this will cause them to shear off.
