Your Jeep's top can protect you from getting wet every time it rains. However, if you don't have the proper door surrounds to make it fit snugly into your ride, then you're still going to end up wet. You see, a door surround is installed between the door and the roll bar, and it seals the two components in and prevents rain water from getting into your Jeep. It's also a good accessory for customization because it can enhance the overall look of your ride. If you want to get this added level of protection for your vehicle, make sure you choose wisely. Always buy from a brand that you can trust to avoid dealing with quality issues. Also, you need to be prepared to spend around $100 to $250 to get new ones. If you want to know how a door surround is installed, here's a brief and basic guide that can help you get started.
Difficulty level: Easy
Tools that you'll need:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Power drill
- Silicone sealant
- Safety glasses
- Door surround kit
Note: Installing door surrounds can take around half an hour. However, the time needed to complete the task still depends on your own level of expertise when it comes to utilizing tools.
Safety tip: Make sure you wear safety glasses throughout the entire process to prevent yourself from getting hurt or injured.
Step 1: To begin, remove the top of your Jeep. If the belt rail of your vehicle is secured by molded seals, you need to pull the plastic rivets off to remove them.
Step 2: Next, choose which door surround you'd like to install first.the driver or passenger's side. Once you've chosen, start mounting it in the belt rail that's behind the Jeep's door. The door surrounds should easily fit into the hole.
Step 3: After that, press the channels on top of the door surrounds to make it fit the horizontal sport bar that's located above the door's opening.
Step 4: When the door surrounds are in position, insert the knobs to secure them in place. Make sure the knobs are tightened up properly.
Step 5: When the knobs of the door surrounds are already in, you need to find the left and right tailgate mounts. You also need to match the dimples in the Jeep's body with the holes in the mounts.
Step 6: Next, use the power drill to drill holes at the marks in the tailgate mount. After that, make the rough edges of the holes smooth by deburring them and then seal the holes using the silicone sealant.
Step 7: Once the holes are sealed, secure the tailgate mount using the mounting hardware that came with the door surround kit. These usually come in the form of pan head washer screws.
Step 8: Lastly, install the top arch by inserting one of its ends into the slot that's located in the middle part of the door surrounds. After that, push its other end so that it flexes the bow and then insert it into the slot on the other side of the Jeep.
