Signs and Symptoms of a Broken Fuel Pressure Regulator
1. Irregular fuel flow
Having a busted fuel regulator can cause irregular fuel flow. At times, fuel flow will be so low that it will cause your vehicle to stall. This may also result to engine hesitation every time you accelerate. On the other hand, fuel flow may also become so high that your vehicle will start to emanate the odor of unburned gas. This will also bring you deceleration problems because having too much gas in your system might cause the engine to backfire.
2. Computer errors
This symptom is more applicable for newer cars. Here, a faulty fuel regulator may send error codes that can easily be translated by scanning tools.

Replacing a Broken Fuel Pressure Regulator
Here's a general replacement guide that you can follow to fix the fuel regulator of your ride. Note that some steps may vary depending on the car that you own.
Step 1: To begin, open the fuel cap and access the engine's fuse box to remove the pump relay. After that, start the engine and wait a few seconds until it stalls.
Step 2: Before you proceed, disconnect the negative cable of your car's battery. Then, use a damp cloth to clean the lines and connectors attached to the regulator. As soon as they're clean, you can begin to disconnect them.
Step 3: Next, remove the old fuel pressure regulator by removing its mounting bolts. If your regulator is part of the fuel pump module, you may need to remove the upper and lower sections of the module to disconnect it.
Step 4: When installing a new regulator, always use a new o-ring. Lubricate the o-ring using engine oil and start to mount the regulator in place. Then, secure its connection by bolting it in place.
Step 5: Once the new fuel pressure regulator is in position, you need to pressurize the fuel system and reconnect the components that you removed earlier.
