The Honda Passport midsize SUV was Honda\'s answer to the increasing demands for sport utility vehicles in the North American market. And while the Passport does provide the good mileage and low cost that we\'ve come to expect with Honda vehicles, it has been plagued by severe rust issues. The frames of the second-generation Passport models (1997-2002), in particular, have been known to rust so bad that the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTA) has announced a recall of these vehicles in the interest of public safety.
If you own a Honda Passport, you might be covered by the recall. Below are some common questions regarding the recall and how you can keep yourself safe while driving your vehicle on the road.
Reports have came out that the rear suspension frame components of the Honda Passport are corroding faster than expected, particularly during cold climates. This is because the highly corrosive road salt used to clear the roads from ice in these areas can-according to the NHTSA-cause \"excessive corrosion in the vicinity of the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link,". The corrosion may become so severe that the rear suspension lower link bracket may detach from the frame, seriously hampering the vehicle\'s steering capabilities and potentially leading to a crash.
Based on the NHTSA bulletin, the recall affects only Honda Passport SUV with model years 1998-2002 that were originally sold, or are currently registered, in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Kentucky. These states make use of road salt and other de-icing chemicals that are known to cause corrosion in the components underneath the Passport.
If you own a Passport that matches these criteria, you need to call and visit your local Honda dealer. The dealer/service center will conduct an inspection of your SUV and, if there is little or no corrosion, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. Even after your Passport has been recalled and repaired, you still need to do your part in preventing corrosion from reappearing. Washing the vehicle at least once in every two weeks should effectively remove any road salt as well as dirt and other rust-inducing particles from the frame\'s surface. If you live in an area where cold weather is frequent or somewhere near the coastline, spraying the suspension and frame with a rust-inhibiting chemical, such as a silicone lubricant for example, should help keep rust at bay.
