Short Shift: Jeep Cherokee Transmission Failure
The words Jeep Cherokee bring to mind a sporty and aggressive sport utility vehicle (SUV) that has been America\'s choice for decades. Introduced in 1974, the Jeep Cherokee was initially a two-door version of the more pedestrian Jeep Wagoneer. Ten years later, Jeep revolutionized the Jeep Cherokee into a lighter, smaller, and more streamlined SUV.and the rest is history. The Jeep Cherokee made a comeback in 2014 after a 13-year hiatus. Since then, it has been fraught with transmission woes that leave a bad taste in the mouth of its patrons.
Technical Service Bulletin
The 9-speed automatic transmission on Jeep Cherokees since the 2014 model year has been riddled with problems from the start such as rough shifts and a spike in its revolutions per minute during downshifting which causes slight acceleration. To address this problem, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).the current manufacturer of the Jeep Cherokee.has issued transmission-related technical service bulletins to its dealers.
FCA has stated that the problem is software-related and has released several transmission software updates. The transmission software reflash is available at dealerships by consumer request and applies to all Jeep Cherokees affected by this transmission failure issue. However, owners have reported only \"marginal\" improvements from these transmission software updates. Since the 9-speed automatic transmission is new, this would likely be an ongoing issue until the right software is found.
Transmission parts inspection
The transmission in your Jeep Cherokee could be either automatic or manually shifted, depending on year, make and model. Both types of transmissions can have problems that originate from either the transmission fluid, shifting linkage or clutch. Transmission problems from these parts are minor and only require a few minutes of do-it-your-own repair.
Monitor the transmission fluid level of your Jeep Cherokee and replenish it if needed. Make sure that your transmission has the required limit of transmission fluid so that it can properly cool and shift. If your transmission is low on fluid, shifting may become sloppy or impossible and the transmission can burn up in a very short time. In addition, inspect the shifting linkage to ensure that the components aren\'t bent or broken. Have someone shift your Jeep Cherokee while you watch from underneath your vehicle. Most of the time, you would only need to do minor adjustments. If you have a manual transmission, check if the clutch is worn-out because this could give the impression that the transmission is slipping.
Driving style tips
Driving style and the number of drivers sharing a Jeep Cherokee affects shift quality. If you\'re the gentler driver in the household, expect to experience a few lumpy shifts each time you drive the car after the more aggressive driver. This is because the transmission assumes the driving style of the previous driver. However, the software softens shift quality after just a few minutes of driving. It is important to mix driving styles when a Jeep Cherokee is new so that the transmission can learn each shift over a range of conditions. The transmission could take a longer time to adapt if driving style is consistent but even then, the shifts should eventually become smoother and more predictable.
