There's a lot going on when riding a motorcycle. At first, you might get confused and mixed up with the pedals, levers, and handle bars. But as you ease your way into the throttle, brakes, and up and down shifts, you'll be able to maneuver the motorcycle with greater control. You won't be thinking too much about the handlebar you have to twist, the lever to squeeze, or the pedal to press on with your foot. It'll soon be pure instinct. A firm, comfortable grip on the handlebar will let you enjoy a smooth, exhilarating motorcycle ride as you roll on the throttle, squeeze the brakes, or pull in the lever. So when your motorcycle grip starts to tear or wear, you'll need to get a new pair right away.

When buying motorcycle grips, ask yourself these questions:

What size of grips should I buy? How will I know the right length or diameter?

There's no need for second-guessing here. You can easily figure out the size by basing it on the measurement of the old grips you're replacing.

What kind of handlebars do I have? Am I using beach bars, ape hangers, drag bars, or clubman bars?

Each style requires a different type of motorcycle grip. Knowing the kind of handlebar you have on your motorcycle will bring you a step closer to choosing a perfect pair of grips.

How will I know if I need padded grips? What about rubber grips or those made from soft foam.what are they good for?

What's good about grips made of rubber is that they can best absorb wetness from sweat, rain, or water. So even if these grips get wet, your hands won't easily slip and lose control. This kind of motorcycle grip is best for motorcycle sports.

Some grips are made from soft foam designed with leather straps. These are so comfortable that your hands won't easily hurt or get strained even when you ride the motorcycle for long hours. Thick, padded grips can keep your hands from getting numb when the motorcycle makes a lot of vibrations.

What type of motorcycle grip would be best for off-roading? How about for highway driving?

For off-roading, it's important that you get a firm grip on the handlebars. Your hands shouldn't easily slip. As for highway driving, comfort should be first in mind. The grips should be comfortable enough that they won't easily strain your hands, even when riding for long hours.

Are there other options I should consider?

If you're willing to pay extra, you can look for grips with ergonomic designs or choose a special design that blends well with the style of your motorcycle, be it for customization or simple replacement. The cost of the grips will most likely depend on their style and special features. Now if you don't take your motorcycle out for a spin that much, you may settle for the cheaper rubber grips. But if you use your motorcycle on long-distance travels, then spending a bit more on comfortable pads would make sense.

How do you remove and install motorcycle handlebar grips?

Step 1: Unscrew or snap off the bar ends. Use a flathead screwdriver if the metal pieces on the outer ends of the handlebars are sealed with screws.

Step 2: Use either a hacksaw or a razor blade for slicing through the motorcycle grip along the length. After cutting off the grip, you can finally remove it. For chrome grips, you can just unscrew the bolts to slip them off.

Step 3: Wipe the exposed handlebars clean with adhesive remover or rubbing alcohol. As you remove any trace of glue and other residue from the old motorcycle grip, it's important that you keep each dry before adding some glue.

Step 4: Apply a special type of glue through the opening on the grip and through the length of each handlebar. Push the raised edge of the grip until it's fitted to the handlebar and before the glue settles or dries. Put some pressure onto the grip so that it will stick to the glue. (Note: Make sure that the throttle and non-throttle grips are fitted to the right sides).

Step 5: Put back the bar ends by screwing them or snapping them back into place. You'll have to wait for a couple of hours before the glue completely dries. After this, you can finally ride the motorcycle and check the new motorcycle grip.
