Subaru Outback Excess Oil: Does Your Car Have This Problem?
The Subaru Outback was the result of extensive design development in Japan, Australia and the United States. Launched in 1996, the Subaru Outback pioneered the global crossover vehicle trend. It was touted as \"The World\'s First Sport Utility Wagon\" and quickly became a popular option for outdoor-lovers everywhere. However, not everyone is singing Subaru\'s praises. In recent years, the Subaru Outback has been getting complaints from irate owners due to excessive oil consumption. If you own a Subaru Outback affected by this issue, here are what you should know:
Extended warranty and reimbursement
Subaru of America (SOA) has extended its warranty from 5 years and 60,000 miles to 8 years and 100,000 miles. In addition, SOA will return expenses shelled out for excessive oil consumption such as car repairs, car rental, towing, and invoiced oil consumption of up to six quarts per vehicle. This is in response to an oil consumption class action lawsuit filed against it on 2014.
The settlement will also enable all who have a Subaru Outback to have an oil consumption test for free. SOA has also stated that it will issue any technical service bulletin (TSB) related to this issue. However, the settlement will not help Subaru Outback owners who are still dealing with excessive oil consumption. These owners will still need to have their problem fixed by a Subaru dealer.
According to the class action lawsuit, Subaru knowingly sold and leased Subaru Outbacks with FB engines that excessively consume oil. It also alleged that excessive oil consumption is due to defective piston rings that cause the car to burn oil, possibly causing engine failure.
Technical Service Bulletins
If your engine oil gets low between oil changes and you constantly have to replenish it, bring your Subaru Outback to a dealer shop for an oil consumption test. Subaru has issued a couple of TSBs to correct excessive oil consumption in Subaru Outback vehicles. The first three TSBs.02-143-13R, 02-144-13R and 02-145-13R.provided a repair procedure for the replacement of the piston rings to address verified excessive oil consumption. Subsequently, Subaru issued TSB 02-157-14R, which recommended replacement of the engine short block assembly rather than replacing just the piston rings. This TSB covered 2013 to 2014 Subaru Outback models with a 2.5L FB engine. It also replaced all of the prior TSBs. If you already have had one of the old TSBs performed on your vehicle and still have oil consumption issues, you qualify for the updated TSB.
Against all odds
Despite these TSBs, you may have to assert your case to get the warranty work in your Subaru Outback covered because Subaru has advised that warranty shops must \"confirm the actual condition prior to attempting repairs.\" Keep a log of when and how much oil you add to your vehicle between oil changes. Also, make sure to keep any receipts from vehicle repairs and engine oil that you purchased to fix this issue. Subaru cautions, \"Some oil consumption can and should be expected as a by-product of engine operation even when no concern exists.\"
