From its humble beginnings as a small player in the shoe repair business, Edward Shorma has managed to make the business grow into what it is today-the company that revolutionized the tonneau cover industry. But before it finally tried its luck into tonneau cover production, it first tried ventured into wood business and then in tarp repair and tarp production. So while the business is technically more than half a century old now, and has been making some of the market\'s finest tonneau covers since 1980, it was only in the year 2000 when the Original TruXedo was launched. Today, no other company in America produces and sells more roll-up tonneau covers than TruXedo.
Where it started
The company started out in the business of shoe repair in 1953 with the name “Wahpeton Shoe Hospital.” It was first situated in a clothing store\'s basement in Wahpeton, North Dakota. A decade and a half later, it moved into a new building and got involved in the wood business. The company then saw and took advantage of the growing need for wooden cleats on swather belts, leading to the establishment of the Wahpeton Canvas Company. In 1973, it moved into another location right when its workforce got bigger with 40 employees. Two years after, the company started making campstools, cots, original-equipment seats, as well as interior and exterior house trims made up of veneer-wrapped wood.
It was in 1980 when the Original Shur-Lok roll tap was introduced. A decade after, the Shorma children relocated the truck cover division from North Dakota to Yankton, South Dakota. In 1996, the company changed its name to Shur-Co, which was derived from its best-selling product, the Shur-Lok Roll Tarp. Four years after, the Original TruXedo was released in the market, changing the way truck owners protect their ride.
