Volkswagen Passat: Symptoms and Possible Fixes for your Oil Sludge Problem

Oil sludge symptoms
If there is a low oil pressure warning when oil pump intake is plugged up, there is an indication that most likely, your engine has encounter this annoying problem. Check your oil when you change it if it has chunks of residues or the so-called turbo turns. Another indicator is whether there is a gunk under the valve cover. Conduct a thorough check up

The best method to see if you have a sludge issue would be by removing the oil filler cap and checking under the valve cover. What you are looking for are any deposits of a dark lacquer. Remove the engine oil sludge
What you need is a wire brush that has a thin body. This is what you are going to use to clean the engine. You use a flashlight and look through the oil change hole on the sump pan. Be sure that in doing this, you should be able to see the bed of the oil pick up screen. Stick your finger in there and feel for any sludge. Second, pour a liter of Tetroclean Engine Cleaner degreaser or any recommended solvent that will soften the sludge. It is important to remember that an excessive pour of this solvent will damage the sump gasket the moment it reaches it.
CAVEAT: Do not start your car yet
Do not start the car yet and let it soak for about a day. Then, jack the car\'s passenger front side up. In here, you need a tilt so that not all the solvent drains out. Unbolt the oil change bolt then drain all the solvent out. Set aside this solvent as you will need it to flush out the sludge after cleaning the pick-up screen. Lastly, using your wire brush, work away at the oil pick-up screen. Pour some more solvent through the dipstick hole and flush away the sludge you have worked off. When you are satisfied that it is cleaned, tilt the driver side, drain out the solvent, put bolt back on, and fill it up with oil.
