A sticky dashboard isn’t just an annoyance—it’s a problem many Lexus IS350 owners know all too well. The infamous “sticky dash” issue plagues second-generation Lexus IS models, and while some owners managed to take advantage of a factory recall, others weren’t so lucky. In this narrative, we’ll dive into a creative DIY solution: covering the sticky dashboard with durable suede material to give the car a sleek, modern look while solving the sticky mess once and for all.
The Problem: Sticky Dashboards
For the 2007 Lexus IS350 in this project, the dashboard had become so sticky that simply touching it would leave residue on the fingertips. Lexus did offer a recall for this issue, but in this case, the previous owner missed the opportunity. Frustrated by the dealership’s unwillingness to assist, the decision was made to tackle the problem head-on with a DIY suede installation.
This isn’t the first suede upgrade for this Lexus. The car’s interior door panels and steering wheel had already received a suede makeover, transforming the cabin into a more refined and cohesive space. The sticky dash was the next step in creating a clean, unified interior aesthetic.
The Solution: Suede Dashboard Covering

The suede material used for this project was sourced from Mighty Tech Store. It’s a durable and visually appealing option that’s easy to work with and fits well in automotive interiors. For this dashboard project, the material’s dimensions were more than adequate, leaving enough for future projects.
The process began with removing the old dash mat, which was used to temporarily hide the sticky surface. Using the shape of the mat as a guide, the suede was cut into a template to match the contours of the dashboard. To ensure a seamless fit, parts like the AC vents and infotainment system were carefully removed, allowing the suede to be tucked in securely.
Attention to Detail: Ensuring Safety and Precision

A critical consideration during this project was maintaining the functionality of the dashboard’s safety features, such as the passenger-side airbag. Care was taken to identify where the airbag deploys, and the suede was precisely trimmed to avoid obstructing it. Similarly, areas like the solar sensor and air vents were carefully accounted for, ensuring nothing was inadvertently covered.
The sticky nature of the dashboard worked surprisingly well in this project’s favor. Even before peeling off the adhesive backing of the suede material, the dashboard’s inherent stickiness helped hold the material in place during the fitting process. This unique quirk became a helpful ally in achieving a smooth and secure application.

The Result: A Transformed Interior
The finished product exceeded expectations. The suede seamlessly integrated with the previously upgraded door panels and steering wheel, creating a cohesive and luxurious interior. The rich texture of the suede eliminated the visual imperfections of the sticky dashboard, leaving a clean and elegant finish. From the outside, the dashboard looks just as impressive, complementing the car’s overall aesthetic.
Even minor challenges, like joining separate pieces of suede, were overcome with meticulous stitching. The result is so seamless that the joins are nearly invisible unless pointed out.
A Worthwhile Upgrade

This project not only resolved the sticky dashboard issue but also elevated the interior to a whole new level. The DIY approach demonstrated that with patience, attention to detail, and quality materials, it’s possible to achieve professional-grade results at home. The upgraded interior now feels unique, premium, and tailored—a testament to the creativity and determination of the owner.
