The new Hyundai Santa Fe isn’t just a refresh—it’s a bold reinvention. Gone is the soft, curvy styling of the previous model, replaced by a boxy, geometric design that harks back to classic SUVs but with a distinctly modern edge. It’s spacious, clever, and packed with features that feel almost luxurious for the price. But as always, there’s more to the story than just looks.
A New Look, A New Identity
The fifth-generation Santa Fe embraces a design philosophy that prioritizes practicality and utility. Its boxy shape isn’t just for aesthetics; it’s a functional choice. By maximizing interior space with its two-box design, Hyundai delivers an SUV that feels bigger on the inside than its dimensions suggest.
The design is sprinkled with thoughtful touches, like the use of the letter “H” in various forms, both inside and out. From the grille to the taillights, the “H signature” is a playful nod to the brand. Even the grab handles on the roof, which double as lockable tie-down points, echo the theme.
For those craving rugged appeal, the new XRT trim adds off-road cred with raised ground clearance (8.3 inches versus the standard 7 inches) and toughened styling.

Powertrains and Performance
Buyers can choose between two powertrains: a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a hybrid option arriving later in the spring. The turbocharged engine offers 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, providing plenty of punch for daily driving and highway passing. Paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Santa Fe is quick and responsive, clocking 0-60 mph in about seven seconds.
All-wheel drive is available for $1,800 and includes a lockable center differential and hill descent control. Towing capacity ranges from 2,000 pounds for the hybrid to 4,500 pounds for the XRT trim.
Fuel economy, however, is a mixed bag. The turbocharged engine averages 23 mpg, which is less impressive compared to competitors. Those seeking better efficiency should consider the hybrid, rated at 34 mpg.

Comfort and Technology
Inside, the Santa Fe impresses with premium materials and thoughtful design. The top-of-the-line Calligraphy trim features Nappa leather upholstery, a digital rearview mirror, and a UV phone sterilizer. Two wireless charging pads and a fingerprint scanner—used for valet mode and unlocking the car—add convenience and a touch of luxury.
The dual 12.3-inch screens, fused together for a seamless look, offer a crisp and intuitive interface. Thankfully, Hyundai has retained physical controls for essential functions, a welcome feature in an era of touch-only systems. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and nearly all BlueLink telematics are subscription-free for the original owner.
The second-row captain’s chairs provide extra comfort, while the third row is more suitable for short trips or younger passengers. Still, the Santa Fe makes excellent use of its interior space, offering ample storage and clever solutions like a center console accessible from both front and rear.

Utility and Versatility
Cargo capacity is generous for the segment. With all seats upright, there’s 14.6 cubic feet of space—enough for light errands. Fold the third row, and you get 40.5 cubic feet. Drop both rear rows, and the space expands to nearly 80 cubic feet, with a flat load floor perfect for camping gear or an air mattress.
Hyundai’s engineers also worked to improve aerodynamics. Despite its blocky shape, the Santa Fe boasts a drag coefficient of 0.294, thanks to underbody covers and carefully managed airflow.

The Drive Experience
The Santa Fe delivers a serene driving experience, with a suspension tuned for comfort over sportiness. Wind noise is minimal, even at highway speeds, and the cabin is well-insulated. Laminated glass on the windshield and front windows enhances the near-luxury quiet.
While it’s not the sportiest SUV in its class, the Santa Fe excels as a comfortable, capable family hauler. Rough roads are absorbed with ease, making it ideal for road trips.

Final Thoughts
The fifth-gen Hyundai Santa Fe is a standout in the crowded three-row SUV segment. With its bold design, impressive tech, and thoughtful features, it offers excellent value—especially considering the starting price of $35,300.
Pros:
- Spacious, practical interior
- Advanced technology and clever features
- Comfortable ride and quiet cabin
Cons:
- Below-average fuel economy for the turbocharged engine
- Limited third-row space for adults
Hyundai continues to impress with vehicles that blend style, utility, and value. The new Santa Fe is no exception. If you’re in the market for a three-row SUV, it’s worth a test drive.
