  • Chevrolet Venture: A Guide to Fuel Injector Cleaning

Maintaining the Chevrolet Venture is more than just taking the minivan to the car wash; in some cases, you will need to go elbow deep into the engine. One such maintenance task is cleaning the fuel injectors. Although a rare occurrence, cleaning clogged fuel injectors is a necessary task to ensure that the engine receives fuel at the right amount and pressure in every combustion cycle.

Cleaning the fuel injectors is best done professionally, especially if your Venture is due for a tune-up. However, there are fuel injector cleaning kits available that you can use to clean the gunk off your van\'s injectors, saving you money on repair costs in the process.

Why you should clean the fuel injectors

Periodic fuel injector cleaning is necessary to maintain fuel consumption and engine performance at optimum levels. Dirt, grease, and dried fuel deposits can build up on the injectors over time, clogging the nozzle and preventing fuel from flowing out of the injector properly. Vehicles often used off-road or in agricultural applications are especially vulnerable because of this. And since the fuel injection system is highly pressurized, it only takes one fuel injector to fail before the rest goes along with it.

    When to clean the injectors

Ideally, the fuel injectors of the Venture should be cleaned every 15,000 to 30,000 miles depending on the mileage, driving conditions, and whether or not your van uses the old pintle-style injectors as these are quite prone to blockage. Hot and dry conditions also necessitate the need for frequent cleaning; as a rule of thumb, the hotter the location the higher the chances the injector will clog.

Cleaning should also be done if the van already starts to exhibit symptoms of a clogged fuel injector. Some of the major signs include a noticeable loss in gas mileage and horsepower. The engine may also start to sputter and misfire due to an imbalance in the fuel/air mixture, as well as loud popping sounds and rough idling.

    The fuel injector cleaning kit

Available for purchase in auto parts stores and online retailers, injector cleaning kits allow car owners to clean the fuel injectors at the convenience of their own homes. The kit typically consists of a canister of cleaning solution, a fuel pressure gauge, and a hose that connects the fuel injector to the fuel rail. These kits also tend to have a universal design that makes them compatible with most fuel injection model designs, although it is still recommended to check with the manual to see if it is safe to use on your Venture.

The process of cleaning the injectors with a cleaning kit depends mainly on the type of kit you purchased, although in most cases, it starts with disconnecting the fuel pump and pressure regulator vacuum line. The cleaning kit is then connected to the fuel pressure test port on the fuel rail and the engine turned on, causing the pressurized cleaning solution to cycle through the injectors. The entire process lasts around 5 to 10 minutes, after which the engine will shut down on its own.
