  • Know Car Problems Leading to Serious Mechanical Damage in a Nissan Altima

There are a 101 ways that a vehicle can become less powerful, and the satisfying performance that it once was able to give gradually becomes an annoyance. Things can get out of hand if you don\'t provide the needed cure at the onset of a problem. Remember that even the simplest glitches can lead to costly mechanical damage, so it would really be wise to readily attend to any strange and abnormal performance that you notice with your Nissan Altima. You also have to be familiar about the signs that mean serious damage within the engine and the transmission system.

What are the signs to watch out for?

The CVT transmission system has started to make its way back to the auto industry, but it remains to be susceptible to damage. Shuttering, vibration, hesitation, and rough running, for instance, should concern you. What do they tell, and how should you deal with them?

Delay or hesitation in shifting is primarily concerned with transmission fluid. It could be that the amount of fluid in the system is insufficient, thus the system is somewhat forcibly working, with its moving parts stressed out. The fluid can already be contaminated because of leaks, a worn oil filter, leaking vacuum hose, or being unable to service it at the scheduled interval. You may need to tap up fluid, replace the oil filter or vacuum hose, or drain and replace the fluid. Rough shifting or engagement, on the other hand, can be due to problem with the shift linkage, or that the engine idles too fast, besides the other signs also occurring with oil-related problems. Note, however, that when the transmission is also shuttering and vibrating, internal damage is most likely what you are looking in to. In such a case, bring your vehicle to a transmission specialist for repair.

Why does the engine consume oil excessively?

The most possible cause of excessive oil consumption is leaking. Leaks may only require the oil filter and the bolts of the engine cover gaskets to be tightened. If they are already worn or defective, replacement is the most plausible solution. Oil leaks can also be traced back to a problematic drain plug. It could be that the nut is loose, or the threads are misaligned or has already been stripped. Solution is tightening, realignment, or replacement, depending on the problem. Drain plug repair kits are available should you decide to have it repaired. If the problem is with the PCV system, you may need to replace a leaking hose, or simply clean the valve. If the latter is damaged, replace as necessary. And if it is due to low compression resulting from worn or broken internal engine parts, a mechanic is what you need.

What happens when the head gasket is blown?

You have no other option but to have the engine repaired when its head gasket is blown, because it will surely cause more serious problems with the internal parts of the engine. The best thing you can do is prevent the head gasket from being blown by making sure that all possibilities of engine overheating are kept at bay.
